It’s a controversial thing, the console war. Many a life has been lost in this epic battle we all know and love.
One of the main battlegrounds has been on the subject of online play. Xbox users argue to justify the $60 price tag for Xbox Live, while PSN players say that free is as good as it gets. Let’s take a proper look at this, keeping in mind that I will try to be as non biased as possible.
Imagine that I am currently an Xbox Fanboy (not an “Xbot” per se, rather a moderately biased individual), fuelled by the recent Halo Wars demo and chomping at the bit to slam Killzone 2:
“Xbox users receive a lot of content – and I mean a lot. All sorts of free DLC is planned and published on the green machine, while PS3 users look enviously at the mountains of maps, levels and game expansions everyone but them is getting. I love Xbox Live because it has great developer support. We also have cool features that the PSN doesn’t, cross game voice chat, party support and in-game music for all titles.”
Now, imagine me back to what I previously was, a PS3 user.
There are a thousand responses to the Xbox argument. Just search “Xbox Live better than PSN” on google. Viola, instant flame war! I don’t know about you but I think that one or two myths should be busted, namely:
1. Content: PSN users are beginning to experience the same level of distribution as on Xbox Live. Almost all digital download releases planned for the XBLA are currently slated the PS Store as well. This is definitly something that has changed. With an increase in users to that of equal to Xbox Live, the PSN is growing strong.
2. Features: Yes, the XMB is lacking, but things get improved over time. PSN users got a new “trophy” system last year that allowed them to get the same in game achievements that the Xbox has had for quite a while. You see, Sony tends to work things out as they go along. Enough call for a feature will make it see the light of day.
With this in mind I would like to give you all a chance to have your say. Playstation Community member “Caemgen” has created a document beseeching Sony to level up with Microsoft. I would encourage you to have a look and tell us what you think.

In the end, we shape the future of the PSN. If you like what you see, sign the petition and hopefully a better service can make it’s way to our consoles. Playstation users deserve a bit better than this. Let’s make them see our concerns. Maybe Xbox Live wil always be better, maybe Microsoft has won, but it doesn’t mean that we have to put up with a cheap service.

So leave a comment and tell us what you think.
