Prince of Persia: Epilogue Review

At the end of Prince of Persia: That New Version, the ones who quite liked the idea of love destroying the world (or at least the world of a devout priestess) just nodded their heads, smiled, and put the disc back in the cover, along with any non- figurative interpretations. But others had questions. About Elika’s faith and her powers, about the City and it’s fall, about the inexplicably dwindling Ahura, Ormazd’s absence, and the nature of Ahriman’s strength.

In fact, Elika seems to mention any of this directly only twice during the entire story. Before suddenly turning all business again, not saying anything else except “let’s move on”. Women. Here you are, saving the world for them, and they won’t even give you a little philosophical background.

There was also the entire “Prince”- title, right there in the headline. Since apparently the promised kingdom is swallowed whole by an angry god, and the princess wants to promise herself to Ormazd and not you. Which does put a stop to the entire ascension to the throne.

In other words, there was at least an impression at the end of the game there that a sequel would turn up.. Well, then there was this “to be continued” message that pops up with a “bling” sound during the outro as well (thank you for ruining the mood, Ubisoft!). And as a first for a major release of this kind, I think, the end game can be downloaded and added to the original from either XBL or the PSN (the PC crowd will, for some inexplicable reason, not have the opportunity to buy it).

The Epilogue begins with the prince intently wishing to escape from Ahriman, taking shelter in an abandoned tomb from the storm raging outside. About five seconds later Ahriman starts breaking down the doors, and you are forced to escape downwards into the dungeon. By sheer coincidence, this tomb is about the size of a small palace. And is apparently recognizable from a book in the City as the tomb of an ancient king who once freed the City of Light from Ahriman’s grasp.

Wow, the coincidences are really cropping up, aren’t they.

The chase then goes down into the tomb, featuring brilliant visions of falling to the stone floor a kilometre away, more challenging boss- battles, as well as another set of enjoyable half- sarcastic, half nitwit dialogue. Not to mention the entirely new tomb. And although it’s built by the same people who built the City of Light, many areas have some fairly original path- finding. The game also plays a bit more hectically, as you might expect with the dark god of Chaos on your heels.

Technically, the levels seem very polished, and you have a few opportunities to overshoot jumps, or miss a wall- run if you are not quick enough, or aim properly. Which adds some.. difficulty to the game. It’s a good thing to see they’re trying something new.

Whether you are looking for closure, or just want to hang out with Elika for a while longer in a new dungeon, the Epilogue provides at least an eight euros worth of it. More, if you were dissatisfied enough with the original ending. The download size is about 500 MB.
