What does that even mean?
Well, according to Exploding Kittens, the creators of this glorious game, Throw Throw Burrito is a game which lets you collect cards, play your hand and throw things at your friends! Sounds fun right? It is. That’s why over 50,000 people have pledged over $2 million dollars. Yup; this tabletop game has garnered $2,000,000 or two million dollars (for clarification) from people backing the game.

Why did thousands of people contribute millions of dollars to Throw Throw Burrito’s Kickstarter? It’s because Exploding Kittens hasn’t let anyone down. Four years ago…
Exploding Kitten’s Kickstarter Journey
Four years ago, in 2015, Exploding Kittens was launched when Shane Small and Elan Lee created a card game involving a joker. The initial idea of that game was to take turns picking cards until a joker came up. They called it Bomb squad—rolls eyes—and according to them, it wasn’t any fun.
But the idea evolved over time and when Matt Inman joined the team, they developed a set of rules which exploded the game into life. But the creation process wasn’t straightforward. They failed many times. They struggled with the idea of blowing kittens up—those cute kittens. First, they drew up the birds as bombs; and scrapped it—hello; angry birds? Next, they drew up suicidal kittens on cats and scrapped that too—they have 9 lives, don’t they?
On the third attempt, they realised that kittens didn’t need to blow up out of malicious intent or suicidal tendencies. Kittens did whatever they wanted to—and that was the key. They created cards of kittens blowing up and cards that could defuse an exploding kitten card. They soon promoted the project on Kickstarter and it spread like wildfire.
The Origin Story of Throw Throw Burrito
A new member of the team, Brian Spence pitched the Throw Throw Burrito idea. For the duration of 8 months, theyfine-tuned the idea; designed the cards; and “destroyed most of the fragile items in our home”.
The game evolved from the mangoes with animal heads to flying animal ideas to fruit ideas and finally to Mexican food ideas. The name of the game underwent some transitions too. It was first called Weaponised Burritos, then Chucking Chimichangas, then Torpedo Burrito before settling for Throw Throw Burrito.
After deciding the name of the game, they went to work on the cards—at least Matt did. Presently, the cards have 4 styles
- Style 1 – Black & White Stippled
- Style 2 – Hand-drawn, Audubon-style
- Style 3 – Polygonal
- Style 4 – 3D
Due to their previous success Exploding Kittens, they put the Throw Throw Burrito on Kickstarter. You could be one of the 50,000 backers pledging their support to help further develop this beautiful game project.
How Throw Throw Burrito is Played
The Exploding Kittens team had a glorious idea: ‘why don’t we cross a card game with dodgeball?’ Even better: ‘Why don’t we weaponise burritos?’ And they set to work. Simply put, the concept behind Throw Throw Burrito is to collect a set of matching cards faster than your opponent while dodging and throwing (of course) cute and squishy airborne burritos.
Easy right, for those of you have spider senses? Not really. You see, you gain points when you collect cards but lose faster when you get hit by a flying burrito. So, be well advised to set aside all the breakables in your home as this is a dodgeball game you have never ever seen before.
